Memorabilia |
Like most other families in the UK, we have relatives who served in the forces during the Great War. I have photographs of some of them in uniform. Now that service records and medal cards are available on-line I have been able to find out a little more about their time in the war as well as what became of them afterwards - if they survived. To set the scene here is a picture with no known family connections beyond the fact that it was found in the Taylor collection of photographs. __________________________ The accounts of our family's servicemen are arranged over two web pages: one for the Burgess side of the family and one for the Taylor side. Below, I shall briefly explain their relationship to one of the "great grandparents" from the menu on the left. On the Taylor Page of WW1 Veterans: Cyril Andrews, who married Florence Hilditch, sister of Thomas Hilditch Frederick Hall, cousin of Thomas Hilditch Two brothers: Arthur and John Hilditch, cousins of Thomas Hilditch On the Burgess Page of WW1 Veterans: Three brothers: Albert, Charles and Reginald Flower, nephews of Elizabeth Hely George Newbury, brother of Jane Newbury Percy Morris, brother-in-law of Jane Newbury Edward Parker, nephew of Jane Newbury George Rice, nephew of Mark Burgess Joseph Burgess, nephew of Mark Burgess James Hordle, cousin of Henry Burgess Albert and Reginald Burgess, sons of Elizabeth Hely and Henry Burgess

Finally, another anonymous photograph, this time from the Burgess family collection. I suspect that this sergeant leading his troops wouldn't have approved of the broad smile and lack of attention from the soldier behind him. Perhaps he knew the photographer. The cap badge could well be that of the 24th Battalion, London Regiment, which certainly has a few Burgess family connections.
